How we learn vocabulary
Why do we need to learn
vocabulary?
- To describe
- To know
the purpose of the object
- To
relate concepts
- To put
examples ...
When we say that a word is
consolidated in our brain is because:
- When that word is related to your live, and you know the context of
it.
- Knowing a word means that you know the definition and the symbol
related to that specific word.
- When we are able to translate the word in another type of language
means that we know the concept of it.
Things that makes you realise
that you know how to use a term:
- When you use the word in a context.
- When we are able to spell the word.
- When you have a good pronunciation.
- When you are able to know if the word have a positive or negative
connotations.
- When the register is correct (some words are not appropriate in a certain moment.)
How to learn words

Once you
have chosen which words to learn, you next have to
decide
how you are going to learn them. Here are a few ideas:
- Write the words in a notebook (with their translations or
definitions)
- Write the words and definitions on small cards
- Say the words many times (if you have an electronic dictionary you
can hear how the word is pronounced)
- Put the words into different groups (you could use a graphic
organiser)
- Write them in a file for use with a computer program.
- Make associations (in pictures or with other words)
- Ask someone to test you
- Use the words in your own speaking or writing.
